“Last bits of berg B15”. The Hans Hansson, a 27-meter Antarctic expedition ship, approaches a small piece of iceberg B15 off the coast of South Georgia Island. Originally over 11,000 square kilometers and one of the largest icebergs ever recorded, berg B15 calved off the Ross Iceshelf in 2000 and has been melting ever since. Our captain estimated this piece to tower more than 100 meters above the ocean surface, but as much as 90% of an iceberg’s volume is below the water! British narrator: .. After a tiring nearly 6 hour journey to the shore, the baby icebergs have finally made it to the ocean.
> Unidan:
“The black sand beaches of Iceland, a vast expanse of volcanic material laid bare by the endless tides of the ocean. This is the first step for these icebergs. The youngsters have no parents to show them the way. Their mother fractured them off and left them to float on their own. Icelandic tourists now patrol the beaches in frantic search of the icebergs. The vulnerable little icebergs now dash for the safety of the sea. But first, to get past the baking sun, they must float quickly, lest they melt. Once into the surf, they struggle frantically until finally reaching the open ocean, where they will float for months. Using the oceanic currents to guide them, they will float back to the beaches where they were born to lay tiny ice crystals of their own.”

Others may appear green, brown or black, or combinations of these colours. These icebergs have usually rolled over, exposing basal ice, or have emerged from below water level. The various colorations are caused by differences in density, air-bubble content and impurities. For example, black ice is of high density and bubble free; dark layers indicate the presence of rock materials derived from the base of the parent glacier. Occasionally, rocks may be found on the original upper surface of the iceberg. As the iceberg melts, these materials precipitate into marine or lake sediments.
